Euphoria in every frequency.

The Upbeat Songs

The Alesis MMT8, the same MIDI recorder our grandmother used. Still amazing and so fast to work with. Evie usually wanders in halfway through, sometimes with words already written, sometimes with nothing, at which point we tend to just stare at each other for a while before anyone says anything useful.

None of this is festival music. We do not have a festival to play, and the biggest room we have performed in so far is a coffee shop that seats maybe thirty people.

WHAT THESE ARE ACTUALLY FOR

Some of it is genuinely just the gear. Eighty-year-old synthesizers have a specific kind of urgency to them, mostly because you are never entirely sure how long they will keep working before something needs a trip to the repair shop. The rest is just two sisters trying to out-write each other in the same room.

THE BEST ELECTRONIC MUSIC

New upbeat songs get added once both of us can agree the chorus is done, which is rarer than it sounds.

Hooks with a pulse.

Best Pop Music, Hooks That Actually Stick

These tend to start with Evie alone in the studio, sometimes late enough that she is half convinced our grandfather is somewhere in the room, nodding along in approval. A few of these are about him and our grandmother directly. A few are about other things entirely, but the equipment they were written on used to be theirs, so in some sense everything down here still is.

WHAT THESE ARE ACTUALLY ABOUT

A house with this much history in it does not really let you write about nothing. Some of these songs are about our grandparents. One is about a very short, very bad relationship Evie does not particularly want to discuss further.

Once the tracks come out of the box, we convert them to analog and patch them through our vintage Sphere console, made in Nashville in 1976. That is where the mixing happens. It is a big part of the sound we are after.

RECENT ADDITIONS

New slower songs go up whenever Evie is finally willing to stop changing a lyric and let Lana finish the mix.

Latest Music

New songs go up when Evie stops changing the second verse, and Lana stops adding one more layer underneath it. There is no calendar behind it. In some months, that means a handful of songs. Some months it means an argument about a bridge that lasted three weeks.

FAQ's

Not really, no. There are vintage synths and drum machines involved, but the sound stays a lot closer to pop songwriting than club music.

The Alesis MMT8 does a lot of the heavy lifting for writing, along with whatever else survived fifty years in a basement and still works.

Constantly. Usually about the chorus, occasionally about something smaller that somehow turns into a much bigger argument.

Once or twice, if karaoke night at The Filling Station counts, which we are choosing to say it does.

Whenever the gear cooperates and we both agree it is finished. No fixed schedule beyond that.

They usually come from a heavier place. A lot of what happened in this house over the last few years shows up here more directly than it does in the upbeat songs.

Yes, more than one. This studio was theirs before it was ours, and that tends to come through.

Less often than the upbeat ones. These take longer for Evie to actually finish writing.
